Motor Carrier Authority Service

In general, companies that do the following are required to have interstate operating authority (MC number) in addition to a DOT number:

  • Operating as for-hire carriers (for a fee or other compensation)
  • Transporting passengers, or arranging for their transport, in interstate commerce
  • Transporting federally regulated commodities or arranging for their transport, in interstate commerce

 

FMCSA operating authority is also referred to as an “MC,” “FF,” or “MX” number, depending on the type of authority that is granted. Unlike the USDOT Number application process, a company may need to obtain multiple operating authorities to support its planned business operations. Operating Authority dictates the type of operation a company may run and the cargo it may carry.

Requirements and Costs for Mexican Motor Carriers – Commercial Zone

The permits you will obtain include: USDOT, MX, SCAC (Alpha code), UCR, Diesel.

Required Documents:

  • Copy of vehicle registration card
  • Voter ID card
  • RFC (full sheet)
  • If applying as a company, articles of incorporation or copy of the representative’s Voter ID card

Costs:

  • 1–2 Vehicles: $900.00
  • 3–5 Vehicles: $1,100.00
  • 6–20 Vehicles: $1,300.00

Estimated processing time: 6–8 weeks.

All documents must be submitted as clear copies. These commercial permits are exclusively for the commercial zone, meaning up to 50 miles from the border entry point.

For your authority, you will receive a certificate issued by the FMCSA and a copy of any additional permits you have requested.

To get a new Authority, is required file a BOC-3 and proof of insurance. 

Processing time is between 5-6 weeks but could be longer if FMCSA requires extra information or investigation.
